Friday Favourites: Confessions of Love

On February 15, 2019January 18, 2019 By mindforbooksIn books1 Comment

I'm all about the slow burn with confessions of love and I don't like them too flowery. I kind of like the pat on the back 'your alright you are!' confessions of love. Don't get me wrong, I've read and enjoyed a fair amount of insta-love and grand gestures but I always prefer the hidden …

Friday Favourites: Fictional Couples

On February 8, 2019February 6, 2019 By mindforbooksIn Friday Favourites!1 Comment

This is too hard. I love all the love in most of my books so everyone is my favourite while reading them. Top 5 maybe? In no particular order: 1. Hanna (Highness) and Nik in Gemina I LOVE Nik and I found this relationship development to be equal parts funny and sad which is my …

Friday Favourites: Books to re-read

On February 1, 2019February 1, 2019 By mindforbooksIn Friday Favourites!2 Comments

“If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” ― Oscar Wilde My man Oscar knew the score! 😀 I love rereading and every year I have about 30 or so rereads. When I'm in a reading slump I reread, when I'm sad I …

#24in48

I'm so excited about taking part in this readathon. It's something I've wanted to do for a while now and decided it was a great way to start my reading year. Details can be found at 24in48.com and my biggest regret is that I didn't visit the site sooner so I could get myself a t-shirt …

Friday Favourites: Teacher/Mentor

On January 25, 2019January 25, 2019 By mindforbooksIn Friday Favourites!6 Comments

Well this prompt has the potential to make me ramble on forever so instead of talking about McGonagall, Brimstone or Gargarin I decided to give a shout-out to a newbie mentor. Cobb from Skyward. *Spoiler free gushing follows* Now I wasn't altogether sure about this book at beginning. I didn't love the main character at the …

#TheClassic6

On January 21, 2019January 21, 2019 By mindforbooksIn booksLeave a comment

So I decided to set myself a reading challenge for 2019 and I'm naming it #TheClassic6. Very simple really. I have chosen 6 classic novels and I plan to read them in 2019. I only recently branched out into YA but the YA I read is still the genre I gravitate to the most and …

Friday Favourites: Old School YA books

On January 18, 2019January 18, 2019 By mindforbooksIn Friday Favourites!1 Comment

So I am very, very, very new to YA. I only started reading it in the last 2 years at the urging of a friend who told me I was missing out on some amazing writing because I was being foolish. She did't say the foolish part but I think it was implied. I didn't …

Every year I go on a trip with some fellow book nerds that is book orientated. Usually we end up in London, last year we went a little further afield and ended up in Oxford to hear @veschwab give the Tolkien lecture and this year we are Oxford bound again. This time to attend a lecture by the amazing @marybeardofficial! . I read two books by her last year and she is just an incredible writer and I’m so excited. This book is basically two lectures she has given and they are eye opening. It’s a super short read but it packs a punch and I recommend it. . Really looking forward to visiting Oxford again. It’s just the most beautiful town. It looks exactly like you imagine it will look and this time I hope we make it to All Souls College! 😍
I’m glad I gave into the hype surrounding Skyward. I really did enjoy it. I was skeptical at first as I wasn’t loving Spensa but it all came together in the end and I loved it. One of my top reads of January. I talk about 7 of my 23 January reads on my January wrap up, posted on the blog today. Link in bio. . I was having trouble yesterday focusing on my current reads after finishing I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara but I got the audio for The Fifth Season today and listened to it at lunch and feel like I’m back on track again. Looking forward to getting home and picking it up tonight. Does anyone else ever find that sometimes the audio helps to push you along when you are in a rut with a book? . The Fifth Season is so far outstanding but very dense and I was feeling overwhelmed. Very excited about it now though. The audio is very good FYI! 💞
Really want to pick this up soon. I’ve been ‘saving’ a few @veschwab, which is something I like to do with authors I love, but I’ve 5 of hers unread so I think it’s safe to read this one. I think I’ll read this in March. . Today though I’m taking a reading break. I finished I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara this morning and well I’m shook to be honest. I had some fairly horrific nightmares about both Michelle and the case last night and I’m just feeling most fragile after it. Part memoir, part true crime I think the thing that got me was Michelle’s writing and how honest she was about her obsession to see this monster caught. She made everything so relatable and often used her own flaws to describe how much The Golden State Killer was consuming her. . So tonight I’m heading to bed early to watch Grace and Frankie and hopefully sleep nightmare free. I’m afraid this one is going to stick with me for a while though. ☹️
“Follow me, reader! Who told you that there is no true, faithful, eternal love in this world! May the liar's vile tongue be cut out! Follow me, my reader, and me alone, and I will show you such a love!” . I finished my first #TheClassic6 read of the year last week and the word I would use to describe it is 'interesting'. . To be completely honest I hadn't a clue what was going on at times but I did find it to be very entertaining. A clear theme throughout the book was censorship and that makes a lot of sense given the time period and location. It's also just bananas but the kind of bananas I like. I had very strange dreams about Satan's Ball for a few nights as well. I'm not sure I feel about them. 😂 . Worth a read!
Trying to be better about posting this month. I’ve been so bad. The plus side to the less posting is I’ve been reading more but I’m going to try and do both in February and I’m using my Owlcrate journal to help make that happen. . #TheFifthSeason by #NKJemisin is my next read. I’m very excited about it because I’ve heard so many amazing things about it. I’ve read some truly excellent books so far this year and shock of all shocks some of my favourites have been non-fiction! 😱 This is unheard of but also exciting. So far the best have been Educated by Tara Westover and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. I’m in the middle of I’ll Be Gone in The Dark by Michelle McNamara and LOVING it. . So, any big non-fiction readers out there who can recommend some great books?
Is there anything worse than finishing a book and not having the next in the series ready to hand so you can read it right away? Finished Crazy Rich Asians and China Rich Girlfriend is currently in the post on the way but I’ll tell you where it’s not. My hands! 😂 . So I’m all of a fluster with what to read so decided to pick up The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi because Paris and I booked flights for a Paris trip on Monday so it seemed a good enough reason to pick it up. 🤷‍♀️ . Only on chapter 3 so not really sure what it’s all about yet (I didn’t read the blurb) but so far I like the writing and I’m intrigued by the world building.
